[this is a terrible name, it needs a better name]

This rule set was designed for a small amount of time (2-4 hours) and with a small amount of people (10-30) in mind. It is useful for situations where there is nothing else to occupy the player's time, where HvZ is the only thing a player is doing. It provides near constant activity and goals to work toward. It also requires impartial, constant moderation (moderators can't play).

Because of the length of the game we suggest handling tags with the honor system instead of using any organizing software.

Objective

Each human is given their own individual mission at the beginning of the game. All of these missions must be completed for the human team to win. Additional missions may be given that involve all human players, at the moderator's discretion.

The moderator can establish an end time at the beginning of the game, or reveal it at some point mid-game, or make the end completely dependent on when / if the humans complete their missions.

The zombie objective is simply to disrupt and tag the humans.

Safety Rules

Rules created for the safety of all players are strictly enforced. Violation of safety rules will result in a ban from the game.

- No realistic looking weaponry. - Guns may not be visible inside of academic buildings or jobs on campus. - Players may not use cars. - Darts must not hurt on impact. (If you’re not sure about this, fire it at point-blank range into your own eye and see if it hurts. If you’re still not sure, just speak with a moderator.)

Equipment

This gear is required for all players:

- Bandana - Nerf gun and/or socks - At least one mission card for each player

Safe Zones

Some missions can involve establishing safe zones - you will want a moderator at this location to inform players of the rule change (the addition of a safe zone). You may also want to make the area around the moderator base (where humans turn in and complete their missions) a safe zone.

Beyond that, additional safe zones always depend on the location, and how dangerous areas are / how much you'll be yelled at by the neighbors. Use common sense and be safe.

It might be necessary to set clear boundaries that no player can step outside of around your playfield. For new moderators: this can be more difficult than it seams. Using obvious landmarks like roads (or straight lines in general) will make it easier on your players.

Human Rules

At the beginning of the game, every human is given a piece of paper with their mission.

All missions need to be completed for the humans to win.

Humans are allowed to tell other players what mission they have, but they are not allowed to show anyone else their piece of paper.

A mission is only completed when the piece of paper has been returned to the moderators.

Wearing a Headband: Humans must wear a headband around an arm or leg to identify them as players of the game.

Stunning a Zombie: Humans may stun a Zombie for [2-10, with 5 being a good compromise] minutes by shooting them with a Nerf gun or throwing a sock at them.

When Tagged By a Zombie: After [same as stun time] minutes, a Human becomes a member of the Zombie team. Wear your bandana around your head - you are now allowed to tag other Humans.

  • If are tagged before you are able to complete your mission, must return your mission card to the moderators before you may begin playing as a zombie.

Roles / Individual Missions

We (the humansvszombies.org team) are very proud of this ruleset. We came up with it in a pinch and it worked out really well. That said, we see a lot of room for improvement in these roles / missions. So use these as a guide, but create your own as well. And most importantly, come back and tell us what worked.

Header

This text is written at the top of all mission cards (optional - if you're printing these out)

This is your mission assignment. You cannot show other players your mission assignment. If you complete your mission or get tagged, return this mission to the moderators. When you complete your job, turn this card into the moderators to complete the assignment. The humans must complete all of their mission assignments before they can be rescued.

Cartographer

Make map of the gameplay area - note major landmarks, mind scale and layout. Turn the map in to the moderators.

Quarter Master

requires placement of props / socks by moderators

You must find the 10 ammo drops scattered around the perimeter. Bring them to the moderators, then redistribute them to your teammates to complete the mission.

Additional / optional bonus, once mission is complete:

requires rule: Tagged humans turn their socks / blasters into the moderators

You may redistribute weapons recovered from tagged humans to your teammates

Census Director

Collect the names and cell phone numbers of each human. Turn it in to the moderators.

Information Warfare

only works if players have access to a printer. Can be adapted to work with pen / paper, but the number should be lowered accordingly - you don't want them spending the entire game trying to draw posters

Create a flier warning of the zombie attack. Post 15 fliers on local offices and in public spaces. They must be at least 25 feet away from one another.

Surveyor

all mention of "give to / bring to the moderators" refers to the place selected by the surveyor. You may chose to make this area a permanent safe zone as well

Find a place for the moderators to set up camp. No one can report to the moderators (and no missions can be completed) until this camp is established. Once you tell us where to set up, you will get a special ability

Trapper [2]

requires scotch tape

Find the other trapper. Work with them to mark an enclosed area no larger than 15 feet in diameter on the ground using tape (we will provide). Stun a zombie in this area.

Signal Officer

potentially dangerous, use with caution. Requires 'beacon' or balloon.

Place the helicopter beacon above the treeline. See the moderators for the beacon.

War Photographer

player must have a camera. But most cell phones have a camera

Photograph at least 3 zombies

Epidemiologist

this mission is very controversial. One clever exploit our players found was to use the cure on the person voted out - which we decided to allow

Choose a human player to be your test subject. Get a majority of surviving humans to vote (by signing their names on paper) to infect this test subject. When you do, the Original Zombie is revealed AND you get one zombie vaccine (for your personal use only) that you can use to shield yourself from one tag.

Weapons Officer

depends on location

Make an improptu dart blaster out of found materials that fires a Nerf dart at least ten feet.

Sharpshooter

uninspired, but works

Stun 3 zombies

Grenadier

uninspired, but works

Stun a zombie with a sock

Vigilante

This is written as if there are 5 vigilantes. You'll want to change this number depending on how quickly you want the game to progress, and how many people are playing

Find the other four vigilantes. Assassinate them (by shooting them with a Nerf gun) - they are now zombies. Your goal is to be the last surviving vigilante. If you are assassinated by a vigilante, you become a zombie

Original Zombie

This is the one exception. This is not actually a mission, it's simply given as one to conceal who the original zombie is.

You are the original zombie. If you are asked about your mission by another player, lie

Zombie Rules

Wearing Your Headband: The Zombie team must wear a bandana around their head at all times. The Original Zombie does not need to wear a headband.

Tagging: A tag is a firm touch to any part of a Human.

Getting Shot: When shot with a Nerf gun or hit with a sock a Zombie is stunned for [2-10] minutes. A stunned zombie may not interact with the game in any way. This includes shielding other zombies from bullets or continuing to run toward a human. Stuns are not cumulative. If a zombie is stunned a second time, their timer resets.

Other Rules

- Shooting non-players with Nerf darts is a ban-able offense.

- A zombie must have both feet outside of a safe zone to tag a human. Zombies may not use shields to deflect Nerf darts or socks.
